Lauchlan, the fith fon, betook himmelf to a military life. He died foute years ago. He never married. And

Duncan, the Sixth and yourget fon, lives in Wiltshire in England, and is employed in the mercantile way. He lately married, and has a ton and a daughter.

Angus, the eldest fon of this generation, was the tenth defcendent in a male-line from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, and Marjory third daughter of David Boswell of Balmuto (1.) He retided the Ame moft of his life in the neighbourhood of Edinpart burgh. Upon his father's deceale, he became fl chief of the Bethunes of the illand of Sky. He hit B died February 1766, in the 60th year of his age. In 1733, he married a Gentlewoman of the firname of Horn; and by her had fix fons, Andrew, Neil, John, William, Peter, and Angus; and fome daughters, Margaret, Jean, Marion, and Euphame.

Thus have we traced the History and Accounts of the Bethunes of the island of Sky for more than two Centuries and an half. And indeed what hath

been related in thefe Memoirs, the following verfes of the celebrated Pope.

Ferquhard, the eldest fon of Mr John Bethune just now mentioned, was the ninth descendent in a male-line from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, and Marjory third daughter of David Bofwell of (1) Ferquhard Balmuto (1.) He removed from Sky to Kintyre, Bethune, 9th de- where he married Ifobel, daughter of Colin John Bethune M'Eacharn of Kilellan. He fucceeded to the Sth laird of Bal- eftate of Kilellan, upon the death of his wife's brother Neil without iffue. But it was fo much burdened with debt, and what was free of it was so much embarraffed by the Dutchefs Dowager of Argyle, who raised a moft expenfive and tedious process against him, which could not be brought to a final decifion until fome time after his spouse's death: For these reasons, instead of gaining any thing by the fucceffion, he was a great lofer; and, on that account, was obliged to part with a good deal of his own patrimony. He died in the year 1762, aged almost an hundred.

Hector, the second fon, went to the military. He married Ifobel M'Leod, and by her left a fon called Kenneth.

John, the third fon, refided in Sky until a few years ago, he joined a company of emigrants to America. He married a Gentlewoman of the family of M'Leod of Rafay, defcended of Malcolm(2) Douglas's Garve M'Leod, eighth Baron of Lewis (2.), and had a family. Some of his fons had fet out for America a year or two before him..

Baronage.

Colin, the fourth fon, became an Officer of the Customs at Inverness. He married Janet Frazer, and

After going through a course of education, he became minifter of Braccadale in Sky. He was not only a learned divine, but an able physician. He was the first that dispensed the Sacrament of the Supper in the island after the proteftant way. He died in 1707, much regretted.

He married to McLeod, daughter of Manon. M'Leod of Drynoch, defcended of Tormod, fecond son of John M'Leod of that ilk, who was of the tenth generation of the family (1.) By her he (t) Douglas's had several fons. The eldest was a very promifing youth. He died at Edinburgh, when he was ftudying divinity. Soon after this, three or four of his fons died at home of the fmall pox. He had only two fons that arrived at age, Ferquhard and Kenneth, and two daughters, whofe names I have not been informed of.

Kenneth, the younger fon, was favoured with a
liberal education. He was admitted minifter of
Kilmuir in Sky, the parish-church of Sir Alexander
McDonald. He died in the year 1739.

He married Chriftian, the eldest daughter of McLeod of Waterstine, defcended of William McLeod of Hammer, fourth fon of Sir Roderick M'Leod of that ilk, commonly called Rory More, or Roderick the Great, who was of the 14th generation of the family (2.) By her he had two (2.) Douglas's fons, John and William. The latter had a liberal education, and is now minister of Duirnish in Sky. He lately married Janet, daughter of John M'Kinnon of Gloafankil. John, the eldest fon, got likewife a liberal education. He died abroad.

He had three fons, John, Ferquhard, and Angus; and two daughters, Katharine and Florence. Ferquhard, the second son, was a thriving man, the 3d Dr An- and much refpected. He had five fons, Neil, Donald, John fenior, Angus, and John junior. Donald, the fecond fon, was a phyfician, and went to England, where he died unmarried. John fenior, the third fon, was engaged at Sheriff-muir, November 13. 1715, and afterwards died unmarried. Angus, the fourth fon, went to Barbadoes in the Weft Indies. And John junior, the fifth and youngest fon, was loft at fea. Neil, the eldest fon, had a college education, and commenced a preacher. He went to London, and there died unmarried.

Angus, the third and youngest fon, had two fons, Ferquhard and John. The youngest fon John had one fon named Neil. Ferquhard, the eldeft, had no fons (2.)

Katharine, the eldest daughter, was married to Walker Writer to the Signet. And Florence, the fecond and youngest daughter, was married to a Gentleman of the firname of M'Leod in Sky, and had iffue.

Edinburgh, and is now a furgeon in Jamaica. The daughter Margaret was first married to thune of Oftle, and to him had two fons. She was afterwards married to Roderick McLeod in Suaboft; to him had a fon and three daughters. John, the eldest fon, poffeffes and has the title of Breboft. He married a daughter of Alexander Bethune of Clochamish, and by her has issue. And

Ferquhard, the fixth and youngest son of John of Seaboft, fixth and youngest son of Ferquhard, eldelt fon of the fecond Dr Angus, removed from Sky, took a poffeffion in the Island of Mull, and flourished much. He had two fons, John and An-, gus. I know nothing concerning Angus the youngest. John, the eldeft, married a daughter of Kenneth Bethune in Mull, his coufin-german once removed, by whom he had three fons, Ferquhard, Kenneth, and Angus.

Duncan, the eldest fon of John fixth and youngeft fon of Ferquhard, eldest son of the fecond Dr Angus, fixth defcendent from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, was a minifter in the island of Mull. He was fo much beloved by his parishioners, that he was continued in his church and benefice after the Revolution, though he would not comply with prefbytery. His only fon John married a fecond coufin of M'Lean laird of Lochbuy, a family just as ancient as that of Dowart or Morven, and which has often claimed the chiefship and precedency. By her he had several fons. He was engaged in the year 1745. Afterwards he returned to Mull, and lived with his family. His fons left the island, I am informed, long ago, in order to push their fortunes; what became of them I know

not.
