Ferquhard, the eldest fon of Mr John Bethune just now mentioned, was the ninth descendent in a male-line from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, and Marjory third daughter of David Bofwell of (1.) Ferquhard Balmuto (1.) He removed from Sky to Kintyre, fcendent Bethune, 9th de- where he married Ifobel, daughter of Colin John Bethune M'Eacharn of Kilellan. He fucceeded to the sth laird of Bal- eftate of Kilellan, upon the death of his wife's brother Neil without iffue. But it was fo much burdened with debt, and what was free of it was fo much embarraffed by the Dutchefs Dowager of Argyle, who raised a most expensive and tedious process against him, which could not be brought to a final decifion until fome time after his spouse's death For thefe reasons, inftead of gaining any thing by the fucceffion, he was a great lofer; and, on that account, was obliged to part with a good deal his own patrimony. He died in the year 1762, aged almost an hundred.

Hector, the fecond fon, went to the military. He married Ifobel M'Leod, and by her left a fon called Kenneth.

John, the third fon, refided in Sky until a few years ago, he joined a company of emigrants to America. He married a Gentlewoman of the family of M'Leod of Rafay, defcended of Malcolm(2.) Douglas's Garve M'Leod, eighth Baron of Lewis (2.), and had a family. Some of his fons had fet out for America a year or two before him..

Colin, the fourth fon, became an Officer of the Customs at Inverness. He married Janet Frazer, and

Edinburgh, and is now a furgeon in Jamaica. The daughter Margaret was firft married to Bethune of Oftle, and to him had two fons. She was afterwards married to Roderick McLeod in Suaboft; to him had a fon and three daughters. John, the eldest fon, poffeffes and has the title of Breboft. He married a daughter of Alexander Bethune of Clochamish, and by her has iffue. And

Ferquhard, the fixth and youngest fon of John of Seaboft, fixth and youngest son of Ferquhard, eldest fon of the fecond Dr Angus, removed from Sky, took a poffeffion in the Island of Mull, and flourished much. He had two fons, John and An- ̧ gus. I know nothing concerning Angus the youngeft. John, the eldeft, married a daughter of Kenneth Bethune in Mull, his coufin-german once removed, by whom he had three fons, Ferquhard, Kenneth, and Angus.

Duncan, the eldest fon of John fixth and youngeft fon of Ferquhard, eldest fon of the fecond Dr Angus, fixth defcendent from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, was a minifter in the island of Mull. He was fo much beloved by his parishioners, that he was continued in his church and benefice after the Revolution, though he would not comply with prefbytery. His only fon John married a fecond coufin of M'Lean laird of Lochbuy, a family just as ancient as that of Dowart or Morven, and which has often claimed the chiefship and precedency. By her he had several fons. He was engaged in the year 1745. Afterwards he returned to Mull, and lived with his family. His fons left the island, I am informed, long ago, in order to push their fortunes; what became of them I know

not.

He married Katharine Monro daughter of Colonel Andrew Monro in the Dutch fervice, and Janet Monro daughter of George Monro of Culcairn, fecond fon of Sir Robert Monro, who was fifth Baronet of Foulis, and of the twenty-third generation of the family (1.), and by her has two fons, John and Hector, and a daughter Janet.

Peter, fourth fon of John fixth, and youngest fon of Ferquhard eldest fon of the fecond Doctor Angus, had the title and appellation of Skeaboft. He married a gentlewoman of Gefto's family, by whom he had a fon called Ferquhard, who died unmarried; and two daughters, Christian and Ifobel.

Angus, the third fon, married Chriftian, daughter of Donald Campbell of Scalpa, and by her had two fons, John, a chaplain in Colonel M'Lean's Royal Highland Emigrants, and Ferquhard; and three daughters, Katharine, Margaret, and Flora. He and his family went to America. Neil, the fourth and youngest fon, poffeffes the farm of Orboft. He married his coufin Janet McLeod, daughter of William McLeod of Feorlig before mentioned, and by her has a fon Alexander, and two daughters, Margaret and Chriftian, John, the eldest fon, upon his father's death, had the title of Breboft. He married a daughter of M'Lean of Eddin-bain, and by her has two fons, John and Duncan, and a daughter called Margaret. Duncan, the fecond fon, ftudied phyfic in

Edinburgh,

Norman; and two daughters, Flora and Katharine. And,

Marion the fourth and youngest daughter, was first married to Kenneth M'Cafkill, and to him had only one daughter, Isabel; and afterwards to John M'Leod of Totardor, to whom she had one fon called Donald.

John the eldest fon of Angus Bethune of Donnelrich, had an University education. He commenced preacher, and afterwards was admitted minister of Glenfhiel, where he maintained an amiable character, and gave universal fatisfaction. He lately refigned, and lives with his fon at Alness in Rofs.

He married Christian eldest daughter of Mr Donald M'Leod minister of Lochalsh or Lochaish in the county of Rofs, and by her had two fons, Angus and John; and two daughters, Margaret and Flora.

John, the second fon, had a liberal education, and is now minister of Harris in the prefbytery of Uist.

The eldest daughter Margaret was married to Mr Donald M'Leod minister of Glenelg, and to him has four fons, John, Roderick, Donald and Norman; and three daughters, Christian, Margaret and Anne. And,

The second and youngest daughter Flora was married to Roderick M'Leod of Borlin in Sky, and to him has two daughters called Christian and Jean.

The eldest fon Angus had a liberal education. He studied both at Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He was first minister of Harris, and from thence tranflated to Alness.

He married a daughter of M'Leod of Gefto, who lived till fhe was near an hundred years old. By her he had fix fons, Duncan, John fenior, Angus, Peter, John junior, and Ferquhard.

John fenior, the second son, had only one daughter, who was married to a gentleman of the firname of M'Leod, and to him had iffuc.

Angus, the third son,

had the title of Donnelrich. He married Florence M'Leod of Gefto's family, by whom he had four fons, John, Ewan or Eugene, Ferquhard and Norman, and four daughters, Chriftian, Margaret, Euphemia and Marion. Ewan or Eugene the fecond, had, upon his father's death, the title of Donnelrich. He married Margaret M'Leod, daughter of M'Leod of Fernaleas, and by her had a fon called Angus, and a daughter whofe name was. Flora.

Ferquhard the third fon, died a young man. And,

Norman the fourth and youngest son, died, after paffing his courfes at the College. He was a very promifing youth.

Christian the eldest daughter was married to Allan M'Caskill, and to him had three fons, Kenneth, John and Donald, and four daughters, Anne, Margaret, Marion and Christian.

Margaret the fecond daughter was married to William M'Leod of Feorlig, and to him had four fons, John, Alexander, Norman and Donald; and two daughters, Janet and Marion.

Euphemia the third daughter, was married to Alexander McLeod, and to him had a fon called

Norman ;
