He died about the year 1767. He married ne M'Lean, as already noticed, and by her had e daughters, Flora, Marion, Katharine, Mary d Janet. And,

Neil, the eldest fon, got his education at St Andrews, where he commenced Mafter of Arts, and made great proficiency in his ftudies. He was

ordained minister of Kennoway, August 30. 1750. He died, December 29. 1771. He was chearful and agreeable in converfation, his public difcourfes were affecting, and at the fame time fenfible and judicious, he discovered on every occafion a warm heart and strong friendship, and he was particularly kind to fuch of his relations as stood in need of his affistance.

He married Janet, daughter of Andrew Jamieson of Wefter-Newton, an heritor of his own parish; and Margaret Gib, an heiress in Arngoft parish, and by her had a fon called Andrew, and three daughters, Maxwell, Margaret and Jean.

John, eldest fon of Neil fifth fon of Ferquhard, had no iffue.

About the fame time that this John flourished, there was one John Bethune who profeffed medicine in Mull. He was buried at Icolm-kill, and on his tomb-ftone is the following infeription: "Hic jacet Joannes Betonus Maclenorum familiæ medicus, qui mortuus eft 19. Novembris 1657. Donaldus Betonus fecit 1674 If he was not the John just now spoken of, he behoved to be one of his relations. And,

Luckily for her, this Doctor at that very juncture happened to make her a vifit, and, by applying a fimple plant to the part gave her entire cafe. One of his patients told he fent him a cap interlined with fome feeds, &c. to wear for the cough, which it removed in a little time, and had the like effect on his brother."

Description of He had one fon called Ferquhard, who got fome the Weft. Ifles, education as a physician, was remarkably wife and printed Anno prudent, and meddled with no patients but such as he was affured he could give a good account of. He married Anne Bethune, third daughter of Kenneth Bethune of Leabost, by whom he had two fons, Neil and John. And,

Angus third and youngest fon of Neil fifth fon of Ferquhard, married a daughter of M'Leod of Gefto, who was relict of John Bethune junior, spoken of before, and by her had two fons, Neil and John. John

Donald. There is no information whether Donald married or not; nor any thing known further concerning him. John, the eldeft, died, at school. He was a very promising boy.

Neil, fifth fon of Ferquhard, had three fons, John, Neil, and Angus. Neil the fecond fon was a man of great skill in phyfic, which seemed more natural than acquired. He got little or no education, and yet had fingular fuccefs in curing several dangerous diftempers. He did not appear in the quality of a physician, until he arrived at the age of 40. He pretended to judge of the various properties of plants and roots by their different tastes. He nicely obferved the colours of their flowers, from whence he learned their aftringent and loofening qualities. He extracted the juice of plants and roots after a chymical way, peculiar to himself, and with little or no charge. He confidered the conftitutions of his patients before he adminiftred any medicines to them. And he formed fuch a system for curing diseases, as served for a rule and directory to him on all occafions. He treated Riverius's Lilium medicine, and fome other practical pieces, that he heard of, with contempt and difdain, fince, in feveral inftances, their methods of curing had failed when his had been fuccefsful. Some of the diseases cured by him were running fores in the legs and arms, and grievous head-aches. He had the boldnefs and resolution to cut a piece out of a woman's skull broader than half a crown, and by this operation restored her to perfect health. This account, Martin gives of him in his description of the West, ern Isles: And further adds, " A gentlewoman of my acquaintance, having contracted a dangerous

bright genius. Roderick, the youngest, took up his refidence in South Uift. He married a Coufin of McDonald of Clanronald, and had iffue. He lived in good circumstances. His eldeft brother went to Ireland (1.)

John junior, fixth son of Ewan or Eugene, had the title of Lufta. He married a daughter of M'Leod of Gefto, one of the oldeft cadets of M'Leod of that ilk, by whom he had three fons, Donald, Duncan, and Ewan or Eugene. Duncan, the fecond, died young and never married. Ewan or Eugene, the youngest, had only one fon called John. Donald, the eldest son, went to Philadelphia in North America. John junior, the father, was fo witty, lively, and diverting in converfation, that the lairds and other gentlemen of the country, were vaftly fond of his company. And,

Angus, seventh and youngest fon of Ewan or Eugene, died young and unmarried.

John fenior, the eldest fon of Ewan or Eugene, had no iffue.

Kenneth, fourth fon of Ferquhard, fixth defcendent from John Bethune fifth laird of Balfour, had three fons, John, Kenneth, and Donald. Kenneth, the fecond fon, had the title of Clachamish. He had three fons, Donald, Angus, and Alexander. Angus, the fecond fon, had a fon called Kenneth. Whether Alexander, the third fon, married or not, is unascertained. Donald, the eldest fon, was a strong courageous man. He married a Gentlewoman of the firname of Frazer, and had children who all died young. Donald, the youngest son of Kenneth, fourth fon of Ferquhard, died unmarried: And his eldest brother, John, had the title of Leonol or Leanel. He had two fons, John and Donald.

Peter, the second fon, had a fon named Donald, who had two fons, John and that never married, and were both loft at sea.

Ewan or Eugene, the third son, had seven sons, John fenior, Neil, Ferquhard, Donald, Kenneth, John junior, and Angus.

Neil, the second fon, had one fon named Donald, who had a fon called Neil.

Ferquhard, the third fon, had the title and appellation of Trein. He married a daughter of McCafkill of Runnunam, by whom he had two fons, John and Neil, and as many daughters, Elizabeth or Beffy, and Katharine. Neil, the fecond fon, died without iffue. Elizabeth or Beffy, was married to John Bethune, fecond fon of Kenneth Bethune of Leaboft, and to him had iffue as was obferved. And Katharine, the youngest daughter, was married to a Gentleman of the firname of M'Sween. John, their eldest brother, was a man of good natural parts, and well educated. He was a very zealous revolutioner. He married Christian Bethune, fecond daughter of Kenneth Bethune of Leaboft, as was noticed before, and to him had several fons and daughters who died young, and one daughter that arrived at age. He died about the 35th year of his age.

Donald, fourth fon of Ewan or Eugene, died young and never married.

Kenneth, fifth son of Ewan or Eugene, removed from Sky to Mull, where he lived profperously and had four fons, Hector, Ewan or Eugene, John, and Roderick. Ewan or Eugene, the second, died unmarried. John, the third son, died of a high fever, foon after he was licensed to preach the gofpel. He was a youth of excellent parts and of a
