PREFACE.

THE grass hath long grown over the grave of our honored and deeply lamented father BARNES. Other generations have arisen, and in answer to his fervent prayers, the Lord hath sent abundant and able laborers into his Vineyard. But the fathers are not forgotten; and it is in accordance with the wishes of many long-tried friends to the cause of Universal Reconciliation, that the following Memoir has been written. Those wishes are the best eulogy of his character. Humble and unassuming, he would not himself have desired any thing ever to be written of an ostentatious nature, appertaining either to his private or ministerial life.

Perhaps this little work might have been more interesting to many, if the authoress had been more amply endowed with the powers of imagination. She is perfectly sensible of this deficiency, but believes, with propriety, there may be less said of a good man than a great one,
