AND

ND he cried, and faid, Father Abraham, have Mercy on me, and fend Lazarus that he may dip the Tip of his Finger in Water and cool my Tongue, for I am tormented in this Flame. Luke xvi. 24.

After Death there is no longer any Time for fatherly Kindness and Mercy. It is in vain to cry out and call for it in Hell. In vain would any one there implore the Affiftance of any, much more the Poor whom he has defpifed. It is very juft, that he, who has refused to give the Crumbs which fell from his Table, to a poor Wretch who defired them, should eternally defire a Drop of Water, and not receive it.

And banquets on celestial Bread.

See the red Flames around him twine, On Abra'm's Breaft he leans his Head,
Who did in Gold and Purple fhine,
Nor can his Tongue one Drop obtain
Tallay the fcorching of his Pain.
While round the Saints, fo poor below,
Rivers of Salvation flow,

JESUS, my Saviour, let me fhare
The meaneft of thy Servant's Fare,
May I at laft approach to tafte
The Bleffings of thy Marriage Feast.

AND

ND befides all this, between us and you there is a great Gulf fixed fo that they which would pass from hence to you, cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Luke xvi. 26.

How great is the Gulf and Separation between the Saints in Heaven, and the Damned in Hell! and yet we do not reflect upon it. There is no Communication between Heaven and Hell; no more Society betwixt the Righteous and the Wicked; no more Mixture of thofe that fear'd the Lord, and those that fear'd him not, as in the Church on Earth.-As eternal Happinefs confifts in the perfect Communion of God, and his Children, who are. Members of the Body of JESUS CHRIST; fo eternal Damnation confifts in being excommunicated, deprived for ever of GOD, of CHRIST, and of their Spirit, and condemned to the Society of Devils, and their Torments, to all Eternity. The latter have not the leaft Hopes of ever leaving that Place of Punishment, nor the former any Fear of falling from their bleffed State.

In what Confufion Earth appears!
God's dearest Children bath'd inTears,
While they who Heaven itself deride,
Riot in Luxury and Pride.

But patient let my Soul attend,
And, e'er I cenfure, view the End:
The End, how different who can tell?
The wide Extremes of Heav'n and Hell.

I Am the living Bread, which came down from Heaven: If any Man cat of this Bread, he fhall live for ever: and the Bread that I will give, is my Flefh, which I will give for the Life of the World, John vi. 51.

The Love of JESUS CHRIST is liberal and communicative, and that to fuch a Degree, that it is not contented 'till he has given himself; and that not for his own Satisfaction, or Happiness, but for ours. It is not fufficient to thy Heart, O JESUs, to unite itself to mine in one respect alone; thy Love caufes Thee to find Means of giving thyfelf to me, both many Times, and in divers Manners, and still with new Advantage, as my Head and the Fountain of my Life in the Incarnation, as my Saviour and Sacrifice of my Salvation upon the Crofs, and as my Bread and Food in the bleffed Sacrament. —O infinite Gift! O incomprehenfible Ways of giving Thyfelf! O divine Contrivance of the Love of Jesus! O ungrateful, and worfe than ungrateful, Heart of a Christian, if he do not live more to CHRIST than to himfelf.

Let us adore th' eternal Word,

'Tis he our Souls has fed, Thou art our living Stream, O Lord, And Thou th' immortal Bread.

Blefs'd be the Lord that gives his Flesh,

To nourish dying Men,

And often fpreads his Table freth,
Left we fhould faint again.

FOR my Flesh is Meat indeed, and my Blood is Drink indeed, John vi. 55.

Yes, Lord, I believe that thou, by thy Flesh and Blood, art the true Food which preferves my Soul from Death, and will reftore Life to my Body-Oh! let me not be fo unhappy, as by the Corruption of my Heart, to turn this Bread into deadly Poifon, and to caufe this Plant of Immortality to bring forth Fruits of Death. Since thy Flefh and Blood are the Meat and Drink of my Soul, grant me, Lord, the Grace not to deprive it of this Food by my own Negligence and Unbelief. Lord grant that I may always be prepared for it. Let it be my only Grief to fee myfelf deprived thereof for my repeated Acts of Infidelity.

Who now his Flesh and Blood partake, And feeding on this living Bread,
Partakers of the Life divine,
This Earneft of my glorious Blifs,
We foon shall see our Lord come back, I too fhall rife to meet my Head,
His Members all in one to join, I too fhall fee him as He is,
(z)

HE E that eateth my Flesh, and drinketh my Blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him, John vi. 56.

He who eats the Flesh of Chrift, is most closely joined and united to him by Love: it is a reciprocal Communion betwixt the Head and the Members, betwixt Jefus Chrift and his Church. He gives himself to us, and dwells in us: we give ourselves to him, and dwell in him. He is the Fulness of the Church, and his Church of him. Grant, O Jefus, that by defiring and engaging thee to come, and dwell in me, I may answer the Defire which thou art pleased to manifeft, that I should dwell in thee; and let me raise no Obftacle in thy Way, by my irregular Defires and Hunger after earthly Things.

Saviour, thy Flesh is Meat indeed,
ThyNature to thy Church made known
Dath every Saint with Manna feed,
"Till every Saint with Thee is one,

"Till blended with its heav'nly Food,
The Soul thy gracious Fulnefs feels,
And all transform'd we dwell in God,
And God in us for ever dwells. -
