the fword of the fpirit, that is, to appease the flesh, by giving it the full fway and defire of her wishes, that we obtain liberty of fpirit. This is a faithful faying, Mortify the works of the flesh, by deftroying the old man. you live to the flesh, you fhall die, but if you live to the fpirit, you fhall be faved: fo that there is no condemnation to the fpiritual chriftian; for, let him do what he will, he finned not: for all things are lawful to him by the art and cunning of fpiritualizing all fleshly actions, fo that whilst we enjoy, we live. O my, what fweetness!

Calvinifts, like goats, rut out of measure,
Bleat out in fpirit, a twofold pleasuré;
But to you half men, you lose all merit,
And half your pleasure, thro' lack of Spirit,
For quitting paftures you were once train'd in,
And difown your fouls, and turn then nothing.

Club. Envy, despair, presumption, schism, herefy, contention, Pride, railing, infidelity, gluttony, hatred, lechery.

The above heads, if we understood right when we had an idea of God, was oppofite and contrary to the Divinity and forbid under pain pain of eternal punishments. This was the cause, as we could not refrain, to embrace our new philofophy, in order to ftrengthen ourfelves for enjoyment without after-claps or bit, ings of confcience. We acknowledge your lenient medicine, if any efficacy can be drawn from it, would have much weight to our return

Into the chriftian bofom; but, according to fome philofophy, if you should prove to have a foul, you will be in much more danger of reprobation than our new philofophers, we deny him, you acknowledge him and make him an accomplice, partaker aud partner in the very deeds that he detefts and forbids. You cry, it is well done, a twofold pleasure, fpiritual and earthly; in short, and to be brief, if impudence has any merit, Calvinifm is a child of paradife. O the mifery of an infatuated and conceited, vain pride.

Conceited monsters, of a twofold race,
Enthufiaftic tribe, your wizard's face
Contradict your Lord, and impede bis grace.

Hoft. I humbly crave your Enlightened's pardon for my abrupt intrufion on fo high and mighty a fociety, who has it in contemplation. to relieve the great world from all impediments which they have been infected with for near fix thousand years, on the heels of which bring in rectitude cloathed fn her natural and first-born fimplicity, ftate; dress, condition, and inclination, free from impeachment, fhame, or remorfe. The earth is man's and the fullness thereof, wherefore do we refuse to couple, as if man, and only man, were the captive chained down with more than favage flavery and cruel restraint, fuperfluity and experience. Extravagance will be exploded, and like our neighbours of every degree, from the favage who wears nothing more than pure nature, to the gentle O

worm that glides along the furface of our mother earth, enjoying true felicity, when and where prefented; then will fhame and violence be caft out, and love and enjoyment fucceed; then will the fenfes feaft, and the paffions be glutted with virgin honey.

Club. His lordship might be anxious for your return, we will therefore difmifs you with this advice, to apply as his cafe feems philofophically, to crave the affiftance of the midwife, it being a fimilar case with the fair fex in travail. To fome experienced old woman, who we fuppofe by the affiftance of a greasy or oily clyfter, profufely injected into the anus of this great prelate, it will be neceffary to touch over the pipe flightly, by a little tincture tantaridife, in order to enliven the palate and other parts adjacent, and caufe a quick fenfation and titilation, which will give vigour to the philofopher, and by a fudden and vigorous exertion, with the affiftance of the midwife, deliver himfelf from those favages.

Hoft. There comes Rabbe Mofes, if you will give me leave I will let him know that you would be happy to make fome enquiries in which your Light is much interested.

Club. We wish the Introduction.

ELEVENTH CONFERENCE.

Mofes. GENTLEMEN, your will.

Club. We wish, understanding you have been from your youth in fearch of the philofopher's ftone, to make fome enquiries which we perfuade ourselves will caft much light on our new philofophy, of this our enlightened age and hemifphere.

Mofes. Upon what firm have you placed your philofophy.

Club. Our firm is Materialism.

Mofes. To fet forth the luftre and brightness of virtue or good morals, and the filthy and wicked tendency of vice and immorality, I much approve, and the wickedness of our age require found philofophy to ftem and beat down beaftlinefs.

Club. You favour the old fafhioned chriftian philofophy which reftrains our paffions, and puts us in a state below our fellow creatures, which man confiders as a high infult; we act modeftly when we crave the liberty granted to our neighbours.

Mojes. You have, and ftand at par with your neighbours, why, therefore, do you complain unreafonably?

Club. So far are we from enjoying the fweetnefs of fociety allowed our neighbours, that they roll and glut themfelves, whilst we starve with hunger.

O 2

Mofes.

Mafes. What are the enjoyments granted to your neighbours, which you are debarred. from.

Club. Many, too numerous to be fummed. Mofes. As doctors and philofophers, no doubt will root out vice and impress virtue.

you

Club. Our philofophy is raised upon this exprefs condition, to root up the two greatest enemies man has been fettered with from the commencement of chriftianity, fhame and remorfe; and reftore liberty of will.

Mofes. Pray explain yourselves, what is your liberty of will?

Club. To be put on an equal footing and level with our neighbours, who enjoy what man

covets.

Mojes. You fpeak myfteriously, not being candid, who is your neighbour?

Club. Our philofophy is founded and confifts in candour. and therefore no myftery; our neighbour is the different and various productions of our great mother earth, who are all clothed in fimplicity; we mean no more than our natural and priftine ftate, enjoying our will as nature dictates without reftraint, fear of offending each other, fhame or remorse.

Mofes. You then would wish to be Adamites, an old condemned herefy or fect of chriftians who went naked and committed every wickednefs with impunity. God forbid fuch villains fhould ever infeft the world again. You wish to be ranked among the beafts that perish, and I fear much worfe, one man neighing after another. Nefarious tribe, where will your wicked
