This is a superb book listing many known as well as obscure quotations of, to, and about musicians. It is well indexed by both musicians and subjects. An example which is one of my favorites is by J. S. Bach, written as an Epigraph to the Little Organ Book (1717), where he wrote, "For the glory of the most high God alone, and for my neighbor to learn from." The book is replete with humor, proclamations, criticism, and praise of perhaps thousands of such pithy statements.
